Mary Helen Martinez, Houston, Texas - Apr 8, 2005
I knew Marie as a young woman, we were both in our early 20's. I was with her when she delivered her first daughter and I became, Zhennia's Godmother. I was very sad to hear of her passing and sad that I did not get to see her but I will always remember her as the fun loving spirit, regardless of the consequences, Marie and I had a lot of fun in Laredo, Monterrey, San Antonio and everywhere we went. We must have been to every cotton picking night club in the San Antonio area, we both loved to dance, and we went to the different officers club I don't know how many times........until she met her special person and I met mine. I can still hear her comments about different guys we met....and her favorite thing was that we should not give our real name or a real phone number to anyone. So we made these nicknames for ourselves....LLuvia was her favorite and I was Celeste, Luz, Carmela, Choco, and so many I can't remember them. I have found a picture that I would like to share when we were at this restaurant, celebrating someone's 22nd birthday, I would love to make copies and share with her daughters...sincerely, Mary Helen Martinez.

I met Marie on January the 10th. on Houston when I was on my first day of an Scholarship, that was quite an impresion that lasted until today, Marie was, is and will be a very unforgetable woman, that had a very special way to say things, I've learned a lot from her, and still I can see her eyes and listen to her words "Vas a ver David", well Thank You Marie, thank you for everything, you made a better person out of me, a well equiped man to fight for the truth for above everything, and also a committed man to my country, you did it, and I know you are very proud of me.
God himself bless you because you are now with Him, help us and bless us, I love you.

It was a priviledge and honor to have known and on occasion work with Marie. She was a model of dedication & enthusiasm regarding her work and I admired her for that.

As busy as she was, she took the time to smile. She was a global person, a people person. She will be missed!

When I met Marie's beautiful daughters ( so evidently, along with her grandchildren, joys of her life!) I was struck with how filled they each were with the qualities that were so "present" in Marie: enormous strength, passion for embracing life in its diversity and many guises and a love for beautiful things. I am still moved by the way they used these qualities together to create Marie's final journey.

You have alway's been in one of the most exiting chapters of my life.
While living in the Dominican Republic, you and my mother would alway's plan trips all around the island. I look back at those times as the most precious moments I spent in D.R.

You and your family hold a very special place in my heart, and although we have lived in different cities for years, you have never left my soul.

I feel so fortunate to have met Marie. She brought so much love and happiness to my brother Peter and his wife Zhennia, and their children Max and Reece. She was a beautiful person in all ways and her joy and love enriched everyone around her.

.HELLO EVERYONE:

WHERE DO I BEGIN!!!

I'VE READ ALL THE LETTERS THAT EVERYONE HAS WRITTEN AND I AGREE WITH EVERYTHING EVERYONE HAS SAID ABOUT MY BUDDY, BUT I JUST CAN'T BRING MYSELF TO.....EULOGIZE SOMEONE THAT MEANT SO MUCH TO ME. IT SEEMS UNREAL TO ME THAT SUCH A STRONG PERSON NO LONGER EXISTS IN OUR WORLD. EVEN THOUGH SHE HAS LEFT HER MARK ON EACH OF OUR LIVES. IT'S NOT SO MUCH THAT SHE IS GONE, BUT HOW MUCH SHE MEANT TO ME PERSONALLY. I FEEL AS THOUGH A VERY REAL PART OF MY LIFE HAS ENDED. THERE ARE THINGS THAT HAPPENED BETWEEN US AND TO US THAT ONLY WE KNEW. NOW I HAVE NO ONE TO SHARE THESE FUNNY AND SAD MEMORIES WITH. ALTHOUGH WE WERE CLOSE, OUR KIDS NEVER GOT AS CLOSE AS WE WANTED THEM TO BECOME. MY KIDS AND MY FAMILY FEEL MY LOSS, AND I KNOW THEY ARE SINCERE, BUT NO ONE REALLY KNOWS HOW EMPTY I FEEL LOSING THE ONE TRUE FRIEND I'VE EVER HAD. SHE NEVER JUDGED ME, SHE JUST ACCEPTED ME AS HER FRIEND AND TOOK CARE OF ME WHEN I NEEDED IT MOST. I KNOW THAT HER "GIRLS" WILL GO ON TO SHARE THE LEGACY OF MARIE BECAUSE SHE GAVE THEM THE STRENGTH TO GO ON WITHOUT HER. I LOVE YOU ALL, GIRLS, GRANDCHILDREN . HUSBANDS, PARTNERS, FRIENDS AND RELATIONS. IF NOTHING ELSE , WE ARE ALL JOINED IN THE FEELING OF LOSS. GOD BLESS US ALL.. I JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO SAY - MY HEART IS SO HEAVY. DENNIS ALSO SENDS HIS HEART FELT SYMPATHY. MARIE COULD NOT HAVE LEFT THIS EARTH IN A MORE BEAUTIFUL WAY -SURROUNDED BY HER DAUGHTERS WHISPERING BEAUTIFUL WORDS OF LOVE AND DEVOTION UNTIL SHE TOOK HER LAST BREATH AND STEPPED INTO HER NEW WORLD. ..............

LOOK OUT "NEW WORLD" ...... HERE COMES MARIE.

Aye - my friend. There are so many memories of you that warm my heart. From the very first day I met you, you kept me on my toes, and kept me laughing. The thing I think of most is you dancing down our hallway in your bare stockings telling me that you were very stressed out,and had decided that it was time to dance the ballet. Then you would sway and spin outside my office door, and into the conference room, only to collapse across the table in your most dramatic fashion. I would just laugh.

You brought life, love and a spirit of adventure to all you met. Those first days when our little departments were just starting out were the best. You and Conrado & me Jorge sitting around the conference table having pan dulce and that strong strong coffee after lunch - those are truly some of the sweetest memories of my life.

I love you and will truly miss you forever. -dawncita

Zhennia, Daphne, Clare and Lali:

I am sure Mari knows the love all of us feel for all of you. You are the most wonderful, caring, loving daughters anyone could ever have. Your mom was proud of each and everyone of you, her heart was filled with pride, you could hear it in her voice and see it in her eyes. The same was for her son-in-laws and grandchildren. Her family was her priority, the smile on her face, the music in her heart.

Mari has left an impression on all of us. I feel she is still here, smiling, next to us. All the memories we have are unforgettable and inspiring.

Maria Nery Victoria, Miami,Fl. - Aug 3, 2003

Ana Ma.

Marie,
What a fun and truly wonderful celebration of life this tribute in photos and thoughts. I met Clare many years ago back in the parole academy. She is so full of life, spirit and spunk and I know that she gets it all from you. I hope you guys have an awesome birthday party and my thoughts, prayers and wishes are with you each and every day. Thank you for being so very special and for giving Clare your spirit. I have been blessed to get to know Clare over the years and our relationship is strange and unique. I, being "strange" and Clare, being "unique"....HA! I love her and always will and you, being her mom, I love you, too!! Just know that I think of you and pray for you every day as I get in from my night shift patrol on the north side of Houston. Happy Birthday, Marie!

Love,
Tommy (Houston Police Dept)

Marie, you are one of the few people I know that really knows how to live. And I appreciate all the great lessons and memories that you have created for my daughter Celina and me. The trips to Zacatecas and to Guanajuato would have been totally dull without you to choreagraph the fiesta. If there is one thing we know, it is that you know how to dance, and now that I have seen some of the early photos, what can I say but "que piernas!" tienes para bailar. Celina and I wish you the happiest of birthdays surrounded by all the friends and family members that love you. You have touched the lives of many people and they all love you for it. Count me and Celina among those!! Con todo carino, tu amiga, Rosa Maria.

What can I say; you are what being a real WOMAN is all about. You are a phenomenal person. You have taught me so much. Over the past years that I have known you and even now I look to you for strength. You are amazing to me. You have always pushed me to do and be my best. I have always seen you as one of my greatest roles models for life and how to take it on headfirst. You have taught me to never flinch at whatever life tosses you and move ahead to better future. I think of you as my “other” mother in my life. Always proud of what I do and never letting me dwell on the bad. Of course we had our laughs. Remember the time when we chased each other around the house trying to get away from the flying roach? The funny thing was, you didn’t know that the roach was on your shirt and I was really running from you. We laughed so hard. I still laugh about it today. I wish for you to be able to carelessly laugh like that many more times in your life. Thank you for being in my life. I wish you a wonderful and Happy Birthday! I love you!!! Eva Sosa (your little Evita)

Hermine Caraballo, Hanau, Germany - Jun 27, 2003
You only find few friends in life who stay in your heart forever. Marie is this kind of friend. Our times together have been a mixture of pulling each other up when we were down as well as laughing, dancing and celebrating until the cows came home. Midnight tacos and frozen margaritas at Taco Cabana or breakfast at Blanco’s were the rule in our busy lives. A spirit-of-the-moment trip to Corpus Christi for breakfast was not uncommon. Marie is family to me, like a sister. She includes my family and me in her life. Her beautiful daughters and their families embrace me as their “German” friend. Marie has seen my family and me through the most trying times, with encouragement and love. She also shared my triumph of finishing my degree, by her and Lina guiding me through my project. When I married a soldier and left town, we were out of sight, but never out of mind.
My friend — I wish you a wonderful birthday! My prayers are for your health and many more birthdays to come!! I Love You!!!!

Monica Santos, San Antonio, Tx :>) - Jun 27, 2003
Monica Santos from: San Antonio, Tx. your story: To my beautiful Tia Marie from your one and only niece. You are a true example of a leader in life and a woman who stands out by the nature of her commitment and integrity of character. You have been an inspiration to me and others just by being you. I remember when I was a little girl and you would take me shopping with you. I used to love going shopping because I knew that you or Zhennia would get me what I want. I guess you could say that I was a little spoiled by all. I also remember that you would always refer to me by Moniquin. I am glad to say that alot of you has instilled in me today as a woman. I have learned to be depended and willing to take on the challenges in life. I may have made many mistakes in life but the Bottom Line is I turned it around and you were there to always give me advise and feedback. I will always look up to you and love you with all my heart, Happy Birthday. Don't worry your not old, you just like wine, getting better with age. Tia here is a little something that reminds me of you because you always tell me how proud you are of my accomplishments and support me in what I do. Thank you. BOTTOM LINE FACE IT, Nobody owes you a living. What you achieve of fail to achieve in your lifetime is directly related to what you do or fail not to do. No one chooses his parents or childhood, but you can choose your own direction. Everyone has problems and obstacles to overcome, but that too, is relative to each individual. NOTHING IS CARVED IN STONE. You can change anything in your life if you want it badly enough. ( This you always told me) Excuses are for losers. Those who take responsibility for their actions are the real winners in life and Marie was. Winners meet life's challenges head on knowing there are no guarantees. They give it all they've got and she did. Never think it's too late or too early to begin. Time plays no favorites and will pass whether you act or not. TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE Dare to dream and take risks, Compete as Marie did. If you aren't willing to work for your goals, don't expect others to. BELIVE IN YOURSELF! Marie did and everyone believed in her. Tia I love and wish you a Happy Bithday.
God Bless
Moniquin :>)

Mary & Ramiro Carrizales, Mission Viejo, California - Jun 25, 2003
Marie, as your ex-sister in law I want you to know that for the short time I knew you I always respected and admired you, especially your intense love of life and the adventurous spirit you posses. You’ve achieved goals in life that most of us only dream. I know your family loves you and is with you every step of the way. Sending you and your family an inspiring wish. (Mary and Ramiro Carrizales).

GOD WILL DO THE REST

I wish for you comfort on difficult days,
Rainbows to follow the clouds.

Laughter to kiss your lips,
Sunsets to warm your heart.

Gentle hugs when spirits sag,
Friendships to brighten your being.

Beauty for your eyes to see,
Confidence for when you doubt.

Faith so that you can believe,
Courage to know yourself.
Patience to accept the truth,
And love to complete your life.

I asked the Lord to bless you,
To guide you and protect you.

As you go along your way,
His love is always with you.

His promises are true,
No matter what the tribulation,
You know He will see you through,

So when the road you’re traveling on
Seems difficult at best,
Give your problems to The Lord.

And God will do the rest.

Carrie Villareal, San Antonio, Tx. - Jun 25, 2003
I will never forget the reunion that we had in Nuevo Laredo, it was so much fun. When we played musical chairs I was watching everyone that
participated and I kept watching Mari, she was so funny! She was really trying hard to make sure she sat down when the music stopped. At the end it was Mari and one of our little cousins left standing, the music stop and Mari pushed our little cousin as to take over the chair but she let him sit. We all laughed and we gave her a hard time all night long. I really admire Mari for all that she has done, put all her daughters thru high school (Go Provets!) and college and then herself graduating from SW Texas. When she would return from her many trips she would always bring mom a gift, she really loves her "Tia Pepa". When she would come over our house I would just love to listen to her, she would tell us about her students and tell us about her many trips. God Bless You Prima, we love you & HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Love Carrie, Joe & Tia Pepa.

Dear Marie and Family!
Congratulations on creating such special new birthday memories and thank you for including me! The twins, Elizabeth and Marina, just love birthdays so we will join with you all in absentia and celebrate here in Iowa on the 25th in your honor. CASS is still great fun but motherhood is better :) The girls still have their story board dress-up dolls you gifted them and still play with them although now the "dolls" get involved in all kinds of activities necessitating clothes changes about every minute or so--thank goodness for those dolls so Elizabeth and Marina aren't changing their own clothes every minute. Tell your daughter they also love to scrunch up fabric at the hairline as if the dolls were wearing hats, which they themselves love to do. Riding bikes with training wheels and helmets and swimming in their little wading pool is keeping them entertained until we can sneak away to my sister's log cabin on Swan Lake in Wisconsin for some real swimming and sailing. The girls loved ballet, tolerated tap and are starting to get the rhythm of salsa down although it looks a little more like a polka with a lot of arms. But no matter what they do we think it is adorable and their giggles keep everything fun. God is great and we are especially blessed. Have a wonderful happy celebration with your family and friends both near and far. I wish you much laughter and love as you enjoy your special day.
Susan

Sandra O'Reilly, Gerogetown University - Jun 24, 2003
I met Marie while I was working as a Program Officer for the CASS teachers' program. At first it was a bit intimidating to be telling someone like Marie that she had to do this or the other.Imagine that, I was just the new kid on the block and Marie was like this icon with uncountable years of experience and who knows how many CASS children!
In any event, Marie was very patient with me and it was very comfortable to work with such a dedicated person. Tough love are her first and middle name, yet it works. All her students know that you do not mess with Marie, but that if you need her she will always be there for you, doing whatever it takes to help you out.
This is why today I wanted to make sure I could send her my love and remind her that she is always in our thoughts. To our dear friend Marie, wishing her a happy birthday with her friends and wonderful daughters.
With much love,
Sandra

Picture it, a dark & bitterly cold Boston night, you, Daphne, Bobby, & myself walking/hobbling into the hospital. They took forever to see you! That night Bobby took on an entire hospital & one feisty Irish nurse. It was all for you Marie! I remember as they rolled you away wrapped in a blanket, you pretended to cry, & then looked up at us and winked . We fell in love with you that night, & have been laughting about it ever since. We had such an excellent time with you, Daphne, Jim, & Emma on that trip. We love that we got to ring in the Y2/2KY new year with you on the rooftop of their place. We toasted that night, & we'll toast you again at the party. Don Rickles will be there. Lots of love from both of us.

Bendicion Madre,

Happy Birthday! “ Go shorty… it’s your Birthday…! Go shorty… it’s your Birthday…!”

In a Serious Note....
You are the mothers of all mothers.
As your stepson I don’t have words to express my feelings, besides words are forgotten through time, but I will guarantee you, I will lead by your example and pass it on to others.
You are an example of steadfast leadership and kindness we all are proud of. We should not celebrate your birthday or mother’ day just one day of the year but every day and keep celebrating your influence of mentorship, love compassion, and devotion.
Someone wrote
“ Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he or she has overcome while trying to succeed”
— Booker T Washington.
You have cultivated seeds, which in return created fruits of life, now it is our duty to continue cultivating and produce the results in the way you taught us.

La quiero Mucho…….Nah ……Un Paqueton !

I know Marie through her daughter Zhennia. I first met her when Zhennia and I went to San Antonio about 15 years ago and stayed at her house. From the moment I met her she was warm and inviting. I felt welcomed immediately. She was funny and caring. Each time I saw her after that, she always greeted me like a member of the family.
Marie, you are a wonderful woman. You have a great family, your daughter Zhennia is an amazing woman and my dearest friend. I want to wish you the very best for a happy birthday. Enjoy this celebration with your family and frends and look forward to the wonderful ways you will continue to touch so many lives. Nathan and I will be thinking of you.

You always seem to amaze me with your smile and attitude towards life. You still have many places to see and travel to. May your dreams be fulfilled, May God Bless you as you have blessed us. Happy B'DAY

I have just been reading the sign-in book and all the comments that people have said. What can I say to add to that? Marie is certainly unique. I know Marie because I work with her. She has taught me to be agressive and to be firm about what is right. I have learned how to handle the adult students I work with by following Marie's example of being fair but cutting them no slack which would allow them to get into trouble. I have met her daughters, too, and all I can say is she probably raised her daughters using that concept. Just like Marie her daughters are beautiful and amazing.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARIE! (By the way, did you know that my daughter Judy shares your birthday?)
MANY MORE MARIE! The world needs you.

Barb, Covina, CA - Jun 18, 2003
Happy Birthday, Marie! Thank you for your daughter, Millie. She has given me one of the greatest friendships I could have ever asked for. I love you and your family as I do my own.

!!Hola Preciosa!!!
Tu prima.

Marie is the one who got me started in all this traveling around the world looking, listening, and eating this and that....with a drink or two.

I am a good friend of Carmen and Jim Jones, we met them shortly after moving across the street 4 years ago. I have not yet met Marie, but have heard so many wonderful things about her through Carmen. She speaks so very highly of Marie. I told Carmen that just listening to these stories inspires me to do more in life.

From what I have heard, Marie is not one to take life for granted, and it seems that the Lord has blessed her with many good friends as well as lovely children. I do hope that I have the opportunity to meet Marie. May God continue to bless her and all who love and care for her.

Most sincerely,

Hileana Garcia

Mari, Mi comadre! Did I spell it right? We met at a party at Marie's -- lots of students, everyone in the kitchen making food from their own country. I took Mississippi Mud, Louis was serving plaintains with a big smile, Hermine had german sausage, I think, and we ate till we nearly popped, did a conga-line in and out of the house tracking MUD-MUD! It took Marie 2 cleanings to get the mud off her carpet. Marie, Hermine and Lina acted as if they had known and loved me forever and I was instantly part of the crew. We went dancing, ate Dominican, Cubano, Thai, and I STILL DON'T LIKE DIM SUM! The parties were so much fun -- and don't I LOVE a good party, that I had some at my house too. The rule was if you got drunk you had to sleep over, and we always had a houseful in the morning for breakfast tacos. We sang children's or folk songs, each person, one from their native country. Sometimes we all sang at once in our own tongue. Same song, French, German, Spanish. What fun we had! We've had art and artists, "You're in a transition time of your life. I don't know why it's taking you so long to transish.......", music and musicians, dance and food, laughing, laughing, laughing. My car was stolen from in front of her house. We've "hunted" and "haunted", entertained and been entertained, listened to each other's secrets, told each other secrets, counted each others tragedies and rejoiced in each other's blessings. Then we watched with joy as our children married, and our two families truly became one. We've done baptisms, First Communions, weddings and the loss of her Dad. Marie, you inspire me to laugh more, live more fully, desire more, be more. You make me stretch to try to measure up to you. You make me be stronger, and more persistent. You make me want to try harder. I so admire you! I cherish our friendship more than you can imagine. The day we met you became part of my heart. I love you, Mija

Jeannette Wienecke, Kansas City & San Antonio - Jun 11, 2003
My introduction to the delightful Marie was at the wedding of my grandson, Trevor, to her daughter, Millie. Even with the excitement and bustle of activities, I recognized a kindred spirit. There was no strangeness; we seemed to instantly become friends. I was impressed by her spontaneous spirit, her love of music and dancing, and her infectious laughter. During each successive visit to my children here in Texas, I became more closely involved with the ebullient spirit that is Marie. I have laughed with her, visited with her, cried with her, and prayed with and for her. She has truly been a blessing to me in my joy and sorrow. I am touched by her strength, courage and fighting spirit. She is a wonderful mother, loyal friend, and loving person.
As my children here refer to me,
Net or Gramma Net.

Marie was like a second mom to me. When Zhennia and I went to college together we had 3 jobs and went to school together. After classes we'd study 'till the wee hours of dawn. Marie was always great to us. She made us laugh and was always full of energy. I don't know how she put up with us for all those years.

I met Marie at Zhennia's home one evening where we had all gathered for a celebration. I am the type that when I first meet you, I like you or I don't. After spending an hour with Marie, I knew instantly that she was something else. She was so easy to talk to and was very interesting. Marie spoke of all her travels and how she made friends everywhere she went. Marie was so down to earth. I don't know how you couldn't like her!!!!

Living here in Houston with Clare has completely been a whirlwind for me in my 34 yrs. I have met my long lost family! Just as many women, just as strong and loving as my own family, he-he. I have a love for this family and especially for Marie that I cannot even explain. It has felt so comfortable since day one just like an old favorite shoe. Clare has been JUST like a sister...good and bad, ha! She hates me one minute and loves me the next and I wouldn't have it any other way. To have finally met the wonderful mother of this family has been a true blessing for me. The are all very warm with arms as wide as Texas...but don't EVER cross any of them...ha-ha! I've had the pleasure, besides Clare and Marie, to have met Zhennia and her BEAUTIFUL family. LOVE HER! I am looking forward to June 28th to celebrate Marie and to meet the rest of my lovely, family!!!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARI.
I WISH I COULD HAVE KNOWN YOU LONGER LIKE CARMEN, IT ISEN'T EVERYDAY THAT SOMEONE HAS A CHANCE TO MEET AND KNOW A SPECIAL FRIEND AS YOU, I REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME WE HAD DINNER TOGETHER WHICH IS WHAT YOU WERE FIXING FOR US AND YOU WERE TRYING TO TEACH ME SOME BAD WORDS SO I COULD CONVERSE WITH MY CO-WORKERS AND CARMEN SAID, DON'T BE TEACHING HIM THEM BAD WORDS (HA-HA).

IT IS SO GREAT KNOWING YOU, AGAIN MARI HAPPY BIRTHDAY AND MANY,MANY MORE YOU ARE VERY MUCH LOVED BY ME.

Remember those wonderful days of 1963 summer
Rosie and I visiting you all in SA? It was the best
time of our lives going to parties and hanging around
with you and your friends. In particular I remember that night when we planned a party at Breckenridge
park...a watermelon party and you decided that we
needed to spike the watermelon with rum so you
injected it into the watermelon and we all got high
on watermelon. Ha! Ha! Hail to you, Marie for the
greatest summers we ever had. Thanks and we
love you very much!

Remember, I got cancer in 1988 and am still here and love celebrating every birthday!

Te mando un abrazo fuerte,

CARMEN A. JONES, CARMEN - Jun 6, 2003
ONCE UPON A TIME THERE WERE TWO YOUNG LADIES THAT MET FOR THE FIRST TIME ALMOST 50 YEARS AGO. OF COURSE, THOSE TWO YOUNG LADIES WERE MARI AND CARMEN. WE BECAME INSTANT FRIENDS AND ENJOYED "MUCHA MUSICA". THAT IS HOW I THINK OF MARI, "SONRISA CON MUSICA,
PALABRAS CON MUSICA, MOVIMIENTO CON MUSICA, SIEMPRE ALEGRE".

OF COURSE, BEHIND ALL THAT FUN, THERE WERE THE PAPACITOS Y MAMACITAS, WAITING FOR US BECAUSE WE WERE A FEW MINUTES LATE FROM OUR CURFEW. WE ENJOYED OUR TIME TOGETHER BUT NEVER GOT INTO TROUBLE, NICE CLEAN FUN. WE DID, HOWEVER, LOVED TO GO TO A PLACE CALLED "PAPA GALLO" AND DEFINITELY HAD THE BEST LATIN MUSIC ANYWHERE IN S.A.

OF COURSE, WE THOUGHT WE WERE QUITE THE DANCERS, OR SO WE BELIEVED!!!!!

WE WENT THROUGH LAUGHTER, TEARS, HAPPINESS, SADNESS AND EVENTUALLY WHAT ALWAYS SEEMED TO CATCH UP WITH US, POUNDS! SO, WE SOMETIMES LOOK BACK AND DISCUSS HOW THIN WE WERE AT ONE TIME. SOMEHOW WE ALWAYS SAY HOW WE DIDN'T LIKE BEING THAT SKINNY, YEA, RIGHT.

I REMEMBER MARI'S CLOTHES. HER MOM ALWAYS MADE ALL HER CLOTHES, THEY WERE GREAT AND SOME WERE REALLY SEXY. I REMEMBER ONE THAT WAS RED AND MARI ALWAYS WORE THEM WELL.

THEN SOMETHING WONDERFUL HAPPENED BY THE NAME OF ZHENNIA. WHAT A JOY IN ONE'S LIFE. OUR DAUGHTERS PLAYED TOGETHER WHEN THEY WERE BABIES. I NOW HAVE HAD THE HONOR OF MEETING HER OTHER WONDERFUL DAUGHTERS, THEY ARE A TESTAMENT OF THE GREAT MOTHER MARI HAS BEEN AND ALWAYS WILL BE.

SOMEHOW WE LOST TOUCH WITH EACH OTHER FOR A WHILE, BUT FRIENDSHIPS NEVER END, NO MATTER IF TIME SEPARATES YOU FOR SOME TIME.

SO, HERE WE ARE AGAIN, THROUGH TEARS, LOVE, FRIENDSHIP AND SURVIVAL. WE'VE MADE IT AND WILL CONTINUE TO MAKE IT! THE FUTURE IS THERE FOR ALL OF US TO EMBRACE WITH OUR WONDERFUL FRIEND, MARI. FELIZ CUMPLEANOS, AMIGA, CON MUCHO CARINO, SIEMPRE.

The one and only time I have been fortunate enough to meet and hang out with "Clare's Mother" was on the Kemah Boardwalk. There exists some young man who worked on the Boardwalk at the "Guess Your Age" booth who I'm still trying to locate so I can really hurt his feelings. Marie is probably 20 years older than me, but this young man guessed her five years younger than me. Of course, I have to admit, I probably would have made the same guess. The real humor in this is Marie lovingly kept "rubbing it in." It was a fun day!

We had the wonderful fortune not just to have Zhennia as a lovely addition to the Silverman family, but we struck real gold by getting Marie and 'the girls' in the bargain! Happy Birthday. Marie.

I met Clare about 5 years ago during a Sunday picnic while drinking lemonade ...or was it while plying volleyball and drinking beer??? Hmmm ... Well, over the years, I got to know Clare well and she had become a very dear friend. Clare introduced me to her family and most importantly to her wonderful Mom. Happy Birthday Marie!

One of my mother's discipline tactics that most stand out is when I was about 12 in Santo Domingo and she caught me experimenting with cigarettes, she told me in her all so stern voice….if I ever catch you smoking again I will push the cigarette down your throat until it comes out the behind…not an exact wording but you get the picture. I am happy to announce that I have never been a smoker. Thanks mom.

Mi familia y yo te admiramos y queremos.

Lourdes, Garcia - Jun 2, 2003
Marie has always been an inspiration to me. Bringing up 4 beautiful daughters is no easy feat, especially doing it all alone like she has.
You are truly a beacon of light to all of us single moms.
You've taught me to go out and celebrate all that life has to offer you. The good and the bad.
If someone asked me to describe a truly successful, woman, it would be with no doubt, you Marie. "Women are like tea, when placed in hot water, they only get stronger". That's you Marie and I'm so proud to say you are my cousin.
Keep shining your light prima!

My Marie! She definitely makes me wish I could speak Spanish. The fun we have...when we're out together... no one else gets to dance! I can't say how much it means to me to be considered family. When my nephew, Trevor, married Millie I got to get close to Marie and all of her beautiful girls. Just to look at each of them, at their external AND internal beauty, at their differences (they all excel, but in such different ways) shows what a success she is as a mother. To love, nurture, encourage, push, each child to become all that they can be is something a mother can only strive for...Marie succeeded. But she managed to do that while always taking time to be all she could be personally. What a role model and friend. I feel blessed to call her My Marie!

Traci Cerna, Austin TX - May 30, 2003
Marie is my brother Trevor's mother-in-law, and we are so happy that through Millie and Trevor, we also got Marie and the girls. Marie is a Spanish-speaking version of my own mother, Sherrie, and like kindred spirits, they quickly became close friends. Marie has been a source of strength, support, and a role model of independence and living life to the fullest for Sherrie, and our whole family is so glad for Marie's parties, friends, and outlook on life. She has been a great source of inspiration, with her love of people, the world, travel, music, art, food, and fun.

My son was captivated by your Millie while attending SAC. Ultimately he swept her off to California where they live, love and are producing there own brood of beautiful boys. So we are related in a most wonderful way through the union of our children and our grandchildren. I believe when our life is done the most important thing we accomplish is the rearing of our children. I am so glad that Trevor and Millie brought you and your family into our family. Herbito por favor.

You remember the old Readers' Digest features--the most unforgettable character I've ever met? Well, I got mine now, and she's been a great friend. Marie and I met when she and her boss and my secretary and I founded two great departments at ACCD. She's been my sister ever since. JR

Our first meeting: You wandering around Millie and Trevor's driveway and yard taking pictures with your camera. Me trying to chase this brazen trespassor off my neighbors' property!

You did an incredible job raising Millie. She is a totally beautiful, courageous, gentle, loving, spunky, bratty, smart, creative, clever, darling daughter. Apparently you've been cloning longer than anyone! Thank you for making the world a little more fun and interesting because you are both in it.

I could write 100 stories about Marie. She is
one of the most thoughtful caring people I have
ever met. Funny stories that come to mind are
about her making sure they had healthy food in
their apartments. We always have fun visits in
San Antonio. I thank her for sharing letter from
former students telling her how she changed their
lives by caring for them.

Marie has taught me a lot about life and what it
means to be brave. We all love you!!
